A centre of excellence for research on the Ionian Sea

Calabria Marine Centre
The Calabria Marine Centre, an interdepartmental hub, is located in Amendolara, in the province of Cosenza. It was established as a centre of excellence to study the Ionian Sea, a marine environment that has historically been underexplored. The center is housed in a renovated structure that previously served as a sailing center, adapted to accommodate research activities.
Inside, the centre boasts six specialized laboratories: Biotechnology, Microbiology, Microplastics, Microscopy, Mesocosms, Indoor Wet Laboratory.
Outdoors, the facilities include an Outdoor Wet Laboratory, a refrigerated cell, and two swimming pools, one of which reaches a depth of 3.70 meters.

Education and Research
The center also features a main conference area equipped with dual projectors and seating for approximately 80 people. Additionally, there are four offices available for both permanent and non-permanent staff to conduct their work.
Internally, the centre is organized into three distinct Functional Areas, each focusing on different studies and research: Biodiversity and Biotechnology, Monitoring Coastal and Deep-Sea Environments, Trophic Ecology of Marine Systems.
