4th International Aquatic Biotechnology Symposium – Naples, September 9–11, 2026

From 9 to 11 September 2026, Teresa Greca, a research fellow at CRIMAC – Calabria Marine Centre of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, attended the 4th International Aquatic Biotechnology Symposium, hosted by the University of Naples Federico II at the Conference Centre in Via Partenope.
The conference provided an important opportunity for international discussion on aquatic biotechnology, a rapidly growing sector that utilises the biodiversity and resources of aquatic ecosystems to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. Topics covered included: sustainable aquaculture, natural products and marine bioactive compounds, omics technologies, biomonitoring and bioremediation, bioenergy and the circular bioeconomy.
In this context, our scholarship recipient presented her research:
“Interactive Effects of Cadmium and Nitrogen Depletion on Resting Spore Dynamics in Chaetoceros spp.”
Preliminary results suggest that cadmium may inhibit or delay sporulation, even when cell growth is not yet significantly compromised. The study of spores enables the preservation of cultures, the selection of more resistant strains for aquaculture and the monitoring of metal levels in contaminated waters, thereby contributing to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for the future of aquatic ecosystems.
