From 22 to 26 June, we took part in the 30th Congress of the Italian Association of Oceanology and Limnology (AIOL), held in Melfi (PZ) and dedicated to the theme ‘Water, the resource that connects us’.
Dr Carola Murano, a technologist at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Calabria Marine Centre (CRIMAC), was invited to give a presentation entitled:
“From Water Quality to the Exposome: The Emerging Contaminants Challenge”
A journey through one of the most complex and pressing environmental challenges of our time: that of emerging contaminants. From water quality to the precautionary principle, via pharmaceuticals, micro- and nanoplastics, PFAS and other new-generation contaminants, the report explored how human exposure is not linked to individual substances but to the environments in which we live as a whole.
The presentation focused on the concept of the exposome, an innovative approach that considers the totality of environmental exposures to which we are subjected throughout our lives and their potential interactions with human health and ecosystems.
Participation in the AIOL Congress provided an important opportunity for scientific discussion and for sharing the research carried out by CRIMAC and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn on environmental quality, biodiversity and the effects of emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.
