The outreach activities organised by the CRIMAC-Calabria Marine Centre at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station are designed for schools of all levels and are tailor-made to make scientific research engaging, accessible and relevant to students.
The sessions include theoretical and practical activities focusing on research topics that fall within the organisation’s mission, such as:
Marine biodiversity
What is it? How are marine organisms classified? Why is it important to be able to recognise them? How can we protect them and conserve marine biodiversity?
Threats to marine ecosystems
What is marine litter, where does it come from, what impact does it have, and what best practices can we adopt to reduce it?
Marine biotechnology
A journey of discovery into innovative applications linked to the sea and marine organisms.
Infrastructure for marine biology research
Mesocosms: controlled ecosystems designed to mimic environmental conditions, as well as sensors, equipment and instruments for sampling at sea and from vessels.
The activities round off with the CRIMACQuiz: a team challenge to revise what has been learnt, all in a spirit of enthusiasm and teamwork, followed by a prize-giving ceremony!
