In recent weeks, ornithologists Salvatore Urso and Rosario Balestrieri from the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn – CRIMAC (Centre for Advanced Marine Research and Infrastructure in Calabria) have led an expedition to the picturesque island of Cirella, a rocky, uninhabited gem off the coast of Diamante (CS). This island, part of the “Riviera dei Cedri” Regional Marine Park, is known for its limestone cliffs shaped by erosion, its sea caves and the crystal-clear waters that are home to Posidonia meadows.
The main objective of the mission? To estimate the population of Mediterranean yellow-legged gull and collect valuable ornithological and environmental data. These surveys are essential for gaining a better understanding of certain ecological aspects of these birds, in particular to reconstruct their diet and detect the possible presence of microplastics, a crucial indicator of our seas health.
We would like to thank the Marine Parks of Calabria for their cooperation
