Microalgae and Heavy Metals: a green resource for the sea

At the 29th AIOL Congress, research fellow Teresa Greca presented a poster on a study examining the impact of cadmium (Cd), a highly toxic heavy metal, on the marine ecosystems of the Mar Piccolo (Gulf of Taranto).

The research focused on the isolation and selection of microalgae strains from contaminated seabeds, which were tested at various concentrations of cadmium. Preliminary results have highlighted the presence of highly resistant chlorophyceae, capable of growing in polluted environments and removing the metal from the medium.

These strains represent a promising resource for bioremediation applications, offering sustainable strategies to counteract heavy metal pollution in aquatic systems.
