Our series of educational workshops for students at the ‘Amendolara-Oriolo-Roseto Capo Spulico’ Comprehensive School has come to a successful conclusion

On Wednesday morning, at the ‘Calabria Marine Centre’ in Amendolara, we welcomed the third-year classes for an immersion into the world of marine biodiversity.

Following a welcome from Chiara Giommi, a technologist at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn – CRIMAC, the students admired the spectacular images in the presentation by researcher Daniela Pica – a veritable ‘Introduction to Biodiversity’ – and then set off with marine biologist Lorenzo Evola to explore Amendolara’s Bank, a hidden treasure.

The workshop activities were a real journey of discovery: “An Introduction to Ornithology” with ornithologist Rosario Balestrieri, exploring the world of seabirds;

“Marine Biodiversity”, a guided tour through the various taxonomic groups of our sea with Lucrezia Spagoni and Mariaeugenia Samà;

“At the Bottom of the Sea”, where Gabriele Marino and Lorenzo Evola demonstrated sampling equipment such as the Niskin bottle and the Van Veen grab, as well as the diving gears.

And, as always, the fun “CRIMACquiz” was a must, and was received with great enthusiasm by the students; the final prize-giving ceremony and the customary photo in front of our logo marked the end of this wonderful trip for the students.

We would like to convey the heartfelt and enthusiastic thanks of the teachers and students to Dr. Teresa Romeo, director of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dorhn in Amendolara, for opening the doors and laboratories of CRIMAC to future generations. We hope that some of them will soon be able to cross the threshold once again, perhaps no longer as students…

Our calendar is packed with events and science outreach activities: stay tuned and keep discovering the world of research!
