CRIMAC – the Calabria Marine Centre of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn – welcomed the Year 1 classes from the Comprehensive School 1 “L. Milani” in Policoro as part of their school trip, which took place on 13 May for classes 1B and 1C and on 14 May for classes 1A and 1D.
The students, accompanied by their teachers, took part in two days dedicated to exploring the marine world, biodiversity and scientific research, through theoretical and practical activities designed to introduce the pupils to the issues of ecosystem conservation and environmental sustainability.
During the activities at the centre, CRIMAC staff guided the students through a programme focusing on marine biodiversity, the identification of organisms and the role that each species plays in ecosystems. Considerable attention was also given to the main threats to the marine environment, with a particular focus on marine litter, its effects on organisms and the best practices that everyone can adopt to reduce its impact.
The students also had the opportunity to learn about some of the facilities and tools used in scientific research, including mesocosms – controlled experimental systems that enable the study of marine organisms under defined environmental conditions – and various pieces of equipment used for sampling and monitoring at sea.
Each day concluded with the CRIMACquiz, a team challenge designed to provide a collaborative and enjoyable way of reviewing the topics covered during the activities.
The visit to the classes at the “L. Milani” Comprehensive School reaffirms CRIMAC’s commitment to promoting dialogue between the research community, schools and the local area, offering students opportunities to explore and actively engage with topics relating to marine biology, sustainability and the protection of the sea.
