The mystery is solved: our new mesocosm experiment focuses on Hermodice carunculata, commonly known as the bearded fireworm

In recent years, this polychaete has been the subject of increasing scientific attention due to its growing abundance and potential impact on Mediterranean benthic communities and human activities, such as fisheries.

Our research: Within our mesocosms, under controlled conditions, we are investigating the fireworm’s feeding behavior through its interactions with fish species caught in our coastal waters.

The specimens were collected in collaboration with Co.Ge.Pa. Portorosa

The samples and data collected will be also essential for the molecular and biotechnological analyses planned under the new PN FEAMPA 2021-2027 – Regione Sicilia project: “Il Vermocane (Hermodice carunculata): monitoraggio degli impianti di acquacoltura e mitilicoltura e possibili interventi contenitivi”.
