Working together to protect the Ionian Sea

Scientific research is taking action (and diving in!) to protect the biodiversity of our seas. Yesterday, against the stunning backdrop of Soverato Bay, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (CRIMAC) proudly took part in the official announcement of Blue Rescue.

Our marine biologist Serena Scozzafava is representing our organisation at the event, underscoring SZN’s ongoing commitment to supporting projects of significant systemic value that bring together governance, the local area and science.

What is Blue Rescue?
Born out of a collaboration between CESRAM (Centre for Marine Environment Studies and Research) and supported by European funding, the project aims to turn Calabria into a true laboratory of sustainability through three key pillars:

  • Cetacean Monitoring: observation, identification and listening to protect the giants of our seas.
  • Seabed Clean-up: removal of rubbish, plastic and dangerous ‘ghost nets’ from the waters of Stalettì and Soverato Bay.
  • Awareness-raising: engaging the public to foster a shared and informed culture of the sea.

‘Protecting the sea means investing in the economic and social future of our coastal communities’

The ecological transition depends on knowledge: protecting marine habitats and biodiversity is not merely an environmental duty, but the very heart of a Blue Economy capable of driving innovation and sustainable tourism.

We are proud to be part of this change. Full steam ahead!
