To mark World Environment Day 2026, the theme ‘One Earth’ reminds us of a simple truth: there is no ‘elsewhere’ where the things we discard and no longer use end up.
Today, the problem is not just the plastic we can see, but above all the plastic we cannot see. Here at the CRIMAC-Calabria Marine Centre, together with Dr Carola Murano, studies in ecotoxicology are yielding concrete evidence on the effects of micro- and nanoplastics: complex interactions between these emerging contaminants and marine organisms, from phytoplankton to fish, throughout the food chain.
“One Earth” is not just a slogan. It means that whatever we release into the environment comes back to us. Reducing plastic, changing our habits and making more conscious choices are no longer optional. They are essential.
