Sea turtles are among the most fascinating and symbolic species in the Mediterranean, but also among the most vulnerable. Their conservation depends on research, monitoring, the protection of coastal habitats and raising awareness amongst local communities.
At the CRIMAC – Calabria Marine Centre, part of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, these topics are already an integral part of the activities we offer to schools and groups taking part in our educational workshops, including through the presentation ‘Calabria: cradle of sea turtles’, which focuses on the biology and ecology of Caretta caretta, nesting in Calabria and the main conservation issues.
On this day, we would also like to share a glimpse into the future: thanks to funding from the Calabria Region (PR Calabria ERDF ESF+ 2021–2027), a new project dedicated to the protection and conservation of these extraordinary creatures will take shape at our headquarters, reinforcing our commitment to the conservation of marine biodiversity.
Protecting sea turtles means protecting the sea, its coastlines and the delicate balances that sustain them.
