World Water Day – Put a stop to microplastics

Today we are celebrating World Water Day, an opportunity to reflect on the importance of water resources and the threats that compromise their quality.

One of the emerging threats is microplastic pollution, plastic particles smaller than 5 mm that result from the breakdown of plastic waste, fibres from synthetic fabrics, certain cosmetic formulations or industrial products, and tyre wear.

Why are they a problem?

Microplastics can be ingested by aquatic organisms, enter the food chain, carry toxic substances and may also be present in drinking water.

What can we do?

Reduce single-use plastic, opt for natural fabrics and dispose of waste properly.

Less plastic today means cleaner water tomorrow.
